Mignonne “Maggie” Gavigan Smith, New York City based, North Carolinian bred accessories designer, widely regarded for her playful, color-forward aesthetic and fresh, elevated point of view, continues to redefine wearable designs with a couture sensibility. With strong southern roots and a background designing for luxury fashion brands, Gavigan hones a signature, laid-back style with masterful technique and a designer eye. After graduation from UNC Chapel Hill, Gavigan’s passions led her to the Sorbonne in Paris where she began her design studies at Parsons Paris and later concluded them at Parsons New York. Following her studies, Gavigan embarked upon her 14-year career in New York designing for multiple fashion houses prior to the launch of her eponymous label in 2014. As she progressed up the design ladder, she was privileged to travel the world extensively, curating the inspirations that now drive and define each new season and collection of her line. Seeing a void in the marketplace for unique, eye-catching accessories, Gavigan was motivated to reimagine statement jewelry by bringing couture elements into relaxed, universal styles. In 2007, Gavigan felt inspired when she was draping a gown for a fashion show and ripped up a vintage piece to provide inspiration for bead placement. After the show, she fastened the embellished fabric around her neck with a safety pin like a scarf to accessorize her staple tee-shirt, jeans, and sneakers ensemble – a style that would sooner become her signature, acclaimed “scarf necklace” carried throughout each season. Gavigan has never wavered on her steadfast attention to the details of her one-of-a-kind constructions which have become her hallmark, basing each of her collections on a foundation of premier artisanal craftsmanship, custom prints, and broad use of colorful, unconventional materials – reining elements responsible for earning her a loyal customer base and recognition from leading retailers, press, and celebrities around the globe. Today, Gavigan is headquartered in New York with her close-knit team and resides in Tribeca with her husband, Gray, their newborn son, Fields, and cat, Franklin. |
